Race Report

The Bloomfield RR took place Saturday, April 20th, 2013 in Bloomfield, New York. All categories raced that day. It was a toss up to race Cat1/2 or age group in the 40+/50+ race. With some influence from coach Mirek Mazur and thoughts about another race day on Sunday in Calabogie, the age group race (short distance of 45 miles or about 70k) got the nod.

The course itself is what one might refer to as undulating. If you are not going up or down, you are rolling along into either a headwind or crosswind. The 11.23 mile loop has something for every racer. It might be a scaled version of a Classic's race from Europe. With the weather factor it certainly was a good test of the legs.

What a day for racing. If you haven't been south of Lake Ontario, the foothills of the Adirondank Mountains start nearby. That is where we raced. It was chilly with snow blowing around as we went for breakfast about 8 am. The race start was about 10:30. We had time to prepare our race food and bottles with E-Load and gels. Did you see the wind that weekend? Maybe not, but a sure bet is that you felt it. It makes a difference when you have the right fuel and proper rest before a tough event.

The wind was a major factor in the race. To give you an idea of the wind's verocity, on the way down on Friday afternoon, we saw a tractor trailer changing lanes into a heavy crosswind. The truck just about tipped over. The right side wheels of the trailer lifted about 2 feet off the ground. Needless to say, all lane changes were made with extra caution after that. Saturday's wind was about the same which made following wheels tricky.

Our Master age group race was 4 laps and really was not a blistering pace to start. It was steady, with a few accelerations early in the race that amounted to mini-breaks. In the end, the wind was the winner. It shattered all the fields that day. Our race stayed together for several laps, then a split opened. As we trudged on, the group of about 20 riders slowly dwindled and at the end there were about 10 of us left to contest the sprint. One lone London rider had slipped off the front on start of the lap. His gap stayed about the same for most of it too.

I am not sure if last year's bunch sprint take for 5th gave me confidence or not. Knowing what worked from last year where position out of the last corner was important, sitting second wheel was a good spot. Ideally, it probably is best to be 3rd or perhaps 4th wheel there. The hill toward the finish is a little 8-10% stomper of about 250 metres, then there is a false flat of about 150 metres. As the wind buffets the the racer from right side, position battles take place along the yellow line. It is tough to come around another racer, going with full effort into the wind. A leadout is always your best friend. The final sprint might be another 250 metres.

As the first guy led around the corner, he hit the base of the hill and lost some momentum. I just nudged out and around while gaining speed into the climb. As I moved, an armpit check did not reveal a wheel, I moved left and put my head down. There were strong guys in the last group. I was not giving an inch to anybody I thought.

When I reached the false flat, I did not see anybody in the shadows or hear any wheels. London's Joe Narciso had been off the front for most of the last lap. He was faltering just ahead. I caught him fast and went by him hard. I glued myself to the yellow line fully expecting a surge. To my surprise, none came. I pedalled right through the finish line, not looking back, lifting my head or even raising an arm. In that wind there were to many possible outcomes if I stopped pedally too soon.

So, at the end, racing as a 50 year old this season, I was best of the lot. It was a well earned win. Our TDI-ZuckBike team with its E-load fuelling needed a mental boost to start off the season. With injuries and life stirring the pot more than normal, it felt great to add to the list of wins for this great team. 2013 is shaping up to be "a Real Barn Burner" !

The Beginner race was top heavy with 3 Cobourg Cycling Club members taking the podium. Tim Doris, Kevin Jenkins, Chris Herten (CFB Trenton Helicoptor pilot) all were in their first road bicycle race.

In the final race, visiting Ontario from Tucson, Arizona; Dave Swanson rode away in the end from his 3 other breakaway companions. Brandon Spencer of Mirek Mazur's Kallisto-Wheels of Bloor came second and on the low step of the podium was The Z:Team's Brent Aquino. The rest of the top ten are as follows: 4th place - Eddy Maset, Z:Team; Nathaniel Ward out of South Carolina was 5th; Casey Roth of Ride With Rendall 6th; Stan Blazek - Kurzawinski was 7th; Mark Walters Kallisto-Wheels of Bloor was 8th; Rob D'Amico of the Z:Team was 9th and Cuylar Conly of Fresh Air Experience out of the Ottawa Bicycle Club was 10.

The Sport race had the Peterbourough Cycling Club's Brian Simpson edge out Saen Boileau of the Midweek Club for the win. Master D racer Bruce Comacho rounded out the podium in the middle event.

The course again has proven to be winner. This year we had one flat while the St John's Ambulance workers had a light day thanks to the skill and focus of the groups. Photos to come

I hope everybody had a weekend because I am delighted with the racing that took place today.

Eduardo Maset - 3rd Cat 1-4 Masters Men - 2h:07m:14s

The Z-Team had a great showing in the Bloomfield RR. participating were Rob Damico, Eddy Maset, Marc Polsinelli, Bruno Grossi, Greg Cushing and Carmine Caravaggio in the 40 plus cat and Andrew MacDonald in the senior category and Mauro Rizzardo in the cat 4. Greg Cushing got things going in the first lap of the 4 lap race with a move off the front right from the get go! It was slowly reeled in by the antsy Americans when Bruno responded with another move that held up until the end of the first lap. it was Carmine that made the next move, with fellow Canadian Greg Cavanagh on his wheel and the two took turns attacking the peleton until the peleton tired with only Rob Damico and one of the locals responding. once the break established and the climbing began only Carmine and Greg were able to hold the hard pace and they slowly opened a gap of 3 minutes in the hilly and windy conditions. The two took turns and really cranked up the pace and never looked backed. The rest of the Z-Team did a great job blocking and making sure that Carmine stayed away until Eddy Maset and one of the locals surged away from the peleton. Eddy then put a surge on that left the locals gasping, which enabled him to ride in solo for third place, leaving Marc Polsinell to outsprint the group for 5th place.

Z-Team lined up for the 2009 edition of the Good Friday Road Race with 10 riders. The plan was to ride aggressively and get things going right away, an early break of 7 riders got away on lap 2. With Paulo Eugeni in the break we knew he would most likely win as he is an excellent sprinter and many of the usual top finishers missed the break. So we just stayed in the group and Paulo true to his early season form easily won the sprint to win the Master 1 race. 92.5 km, average 39.02 km
